SA to launch plan to tackle gender-based violence. Read Ramaphosa’s speech here.

“Twenty-thousand people were killed in the past year. The majority of killers and victims are men,” Ramaphosa says at summit.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that South Africa will launch a national strategic plan to tackle gender-based violence (GBV) after years of lobbying by activists.

Ramaphosa was speaking at the Presidential GBV Summit Thursday, the latest in a string of meetings convened by Ramaphosa on significant issues facing the country such as health and unemployment.

During his speech, he commended activists who called for a nation-wide shut down in August in response to high levels of GBV and feticide in the country. He says the government is now reviewing national GBV plans and will develop a national action plan.

“Our society is too tolerant of violence against women, often putting pressure on women to withdraw charges against the perpetrators,” he said.

“We must raise boys and girls with the knowledge and understanding that no person has the right to treat them as inferior or to harm them in any way and that boys and girls are equal in all respects.”

Ramaphosa also said that government would consider establishing a national registry of protection orders to improve enforcement.
