Bhekisisa at 10: Here’s what went down at our recent birthday party

  • Bhekisisa took the occasion of turning 10 to tackle the topic of climate change and health — an undeniably urgent threat to the world.
  • Our board chair, Nic Dawes, evaluated Bhekisisa’s place in the media space and its future role in climate reporting.
  • The keynote speaker for the event was Yogan Pillay, director for HIV and TB delivery at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He spoke about how climate change will affect HIV, TB, diabetes, respiratory diseases and mental health in Africa.
  • The climate change discussions culminated in a panel discussion with Yogan Pillay, Bono Nemukula, deputy director for environmental health at the national health department, Azeeza Rangunwala, Africa regional coordinator of the Global Green Healthy Hospital programme at groundWork, Kingsley Orievulu, a social scientist at the Africa Health Research Institute (Ahri), with our very own Mia Malan moderating this discussion.
